Change is a constant in the business world. Companies must continuously adapt, whether to expand and grow your business, make yourself more efficient and productive, or stay ahead of the competition.
While I often hear, “Oh, I love change! Change is good!” – we all know that change can also be hard. It can be messy. It can be confusing.
And, as a business owner, you may think that changes only affect you and your team when it’s something big or something drastic.
But even small to medium changes need to be worked through.
Changes such as the implementation of SOPs, the introduction of new software, or the hiring of a new employee can all cause you and your team to feel out of sorts and out of sync. And, while you know in the long run it will all be worth it – how do you lead your team through the changes they are experiencing?
As a systems and operations expert and project manager, I’m often the “bringer of change.” And one of the most important roles my team and I have as we work with you and your team is to support you – and your team – through the changes. Here are a few of my favorite tips to help.
Communicate Early, Often, and Clearly.
The first step is to make sure that everyone is on the same page about the nature of the change. What are the reasons for the change? What will be different going forward? Once everyone understands the rationale for the change, it will be easier to get everyone on board with the new plan. You also want to ensure your team is aware of what’s happening throughout the change. While they may not need to be involved in all aspects of what’s happening, constant and clear communication will make everyone happier. Your team members will appreciate the transparency.
Be Flexible
Change can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be rigid. It’s essential to be flexible and adaptable. While some things may not work out as planned, you can’t be afraid to pivot and try something new. Everyone is more likely to embrace change if they see that you are modeling flexibility and adaptability.
Prioritize What Matters Most
Whether it’s the latest software update or a new company-wide initiative, change often requires us to adjust the way we work. To help your team deal with change, it’s important to prioritize the things that matter most. Ask for input on what your team thinks are the most critical things to be addressed.
Encourage Feedback
Change can be daunting, but it can also be an opportunity for growth. Encourage your team members to give feedback on the changes that are happening in the business. What do they like? What don’t they like? What could be improved? Use this feedback to help shape the direction of your business and make sure that everyone feels heard and valued along the way.
Be Supportive
Your team will likely be feeling some anxiety about the changes taking place. Be there to support them and answer any questions they may have. Let them know that you’re all in this together and that you’re confident that things will work out for the best.
Emphasize the Positives
It’s natural for people to resist change, but you can help ease their fears by highlighting the positive ways the change will impact them. For example, if you’re implementing a new software system, point out how it will make their jobs easier and allow them to work more efficiently.
Enlist Outside Help
When embarking on a new initiative, it can be helpful to bring in outside help to assist your team. An experienced consultant can provide valuable insights and guidance, helping your team to navigate the change process successfully. In addition, a consultant can help to identify potential pitfalls and develop strategies for addressing them. By working with a consultant, you can ensure that your team is well-prepared to handle the challenges of change.
Provide Training/Resources for Your Team
Any successful organization understands that its people are its most valuable asset. In times of change, providing employees with the resources and support they need to adapt to new situations is essential. Offering continuous training and development opportunities so your team can learn the new skills and knowledge they need to be successful will go a long way to helping everyone feel comfortable with the changes being implemented. By investing in your team, you can help them through times of change and ensure that they remain an asset to your organization.
Leading your team through change can be challenging, but it’s definitely doable with some careful planning and execution. Remember, communication is key when leading your team through change. Keep an open mind, be supportive and understanding, and focus on the positive aspects of the change. These are all essential ingredients for ensuring a smooth transition – no matter what the change – for your team.
